Guatemala City is a dump, okay? Let’s get that out in the open right now. Yes, it’s got great volcanoes all around it, but it’s just a huge, grimy lump of Third World city, which means there’s not a lot of dinero to spend on fripperies like trash pickup or municipal beautification.
But when our plane landed and we looked up at the city, we saw these stunning purple trees — trees with pendant purple blooms that were just amazing. I asked one of the airport workers what they were, but she had no idea.
They are jicaranda trees. Native to South America, they’ve been sent all over the world because they are so beautiful. South Africa is known for them, half a world away. When I think of Guatemala City, they’re what comes to mind. It’s better than the chicken bus.
